The abrupt loss of heart function is called Cardiac Arrest which may happen in a person with or without heart disease. It may happen suddenly or may come with symptoms. It is often fatal if immediate and appropriate steps are not taken immediately. Most of the time it happens outside the health facilities. So, it is very important for the non-medical providers to know the skills and the basics of CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) and AED (Automated External Defibrillator) use in the community.

Basic Life Support (BLS) is the primary medical aid provided to a person in an emergency medical situation. It is important to understand that the objective of BLS is not to ‘treat’ the person but to buy some valuable time until the emergency medical aid arrives.

AED stands for Automated External Defibrillator. It is a safe and easy to use device that delivers a therapeutic electric shock to the heart as treatment for a victim in Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA).

Objectives:

  • To help understand the basics of CPR .
  • To be able to use the AED.
  • To employ community Basic Life Support (drowning and choking)

Method:

Lecture on BLS guidelines

Hands on demonstration with certified instructor using manikin and AED
